Two additional cast members have been revealed for The Rising of the Shield Hero (known in Japan as Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari), an upcoming TV anime based on the fantasy light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi and illustrated by Minami Seira about an awkward otaku whose life is turned upside down when he summoned to a magical world to fulfill the role of a legendary hero.
The new cast members include (from left to right): Rina Hidaka as Firo, a shape-shifting bird monster who is strong with wind magic and who can assume the form of a girl with wings on her back; and Maaya Uchida as Melty, a serious but sometimes childish young lady who seems to be harboring a secret.
The original The Rising of the Shield Hero novels are published in Japan by Media Factory under their MF Bunko imprint, and English language versions are also available from One Peace Books, who describe the story as follows:
Naofumi Iwatani, an uncharismatic otaku who spends his days on games and manga, suddenly finds himself summoned to a parallel universe! He discovers he is one of four heroes equipped with legendary weapons and tasked with saving the world from its prophesied destruction. As the Shield Hero, the weakest of the heroes, all is not as it seems. Naofumi is soon alone, penniless, and betrayed. With no one to turn to, and nowhere to run, he is left with only his shield. Now, Naofumi must rise to become the legendary Shield Hero and save the world!
The Rising of the Shield Hero TV anime is directed by Takao Abo and features animation by Kinema Citrus. The series will broadcast in Japan during the Winter season of 2019, and it will also be simulcast on Crunchyroll in territories worldwide (except Asia).
